Visits Abroad

A fair number of Scout Troops, Explorer Units, Scout Networks and now some Cub Scout Packs and Districts are looking to travel abroad as part of an Organised Scout Activity.

Before making plans and advertising the activity I would urge both the first timers and old timers to download the Factsheet FS260018 “Thinking of going abroad” and read through all the roles and responsibilities of the party leader.

This factsheet can be used as an Aide Memoir to outline your plans and ideas, once you have the basis of you trip on paper, fill out the last page and send it to me. On receipt I will send out a Visits Abroad Folder containing all the up to date forms and guidance leaflets you will need.

Some further thoughts

  • lease note that applications for travel abroad should be submitted at least three months before the proposed start of the event.
  • Does your night’s away permit cover the type of event you are planning?
  • Day trips abroad also fall under this category and require the same amount of detailed planning as a two week visit!!!
  • On the subject of insurance, are you completely covered for all eventualities?
  • Who is responsible and accountable if your expedition/visit/trip/camp experience an incident which is not covered under the policy???
  • Who is responsible for checking that the correct cover is in place for your planned event??

I hope you will not be surprised to learn that the person responsible and accountable for all of the above is YOU!!

Please contact me if you want to discuss any aspect of “Going abroad” via email

Inspection Trips

If leaders are planning an inspection trip prior to taking a Scouting group abroad, they ALSO need to complete a Visits Abroad form and submit it to me in the same timescales (ie at least 3 months prior to departure) as for any other trip abroad.

GLSE International Fund

The principles of the fund and the Application Form have been re-vamped and are available to downloaded here. Applications may be made by individuals, colonies, Packs, Troops, Units, Groups, districts, County Units or by leaders on behalf of individuals where special circumstances exist. The Fund can only be accessed for us on international activities. An applications form can be downloaded here.
