Training Programme

Who can apply?

All modules are for leaders and managers in the Scout Association who require training to fulfil their role.

Modules 1 - 4 are normally completed within the Scout District with the help of your Training Adviser and Local Training Manager. The County Training Team delivers modules 5 – 26.

Modules 5 - 19 are generally for leaders working in the four scout sections. The Modules cover areas relevant to section working: Values, Changes in Scouting, Valuing Diversity, Skills of Leadership, Working with Adults,
Administration, Balanced Programme, Growing the Movement, Young People Today, Challenging Behaviour, Nights Away, Activities Outdoors, Practical Skills and International.

Modules 20 - 26 are generally for managers in a Group, District or County role. These modules cover Administration, Growing the Movement, Section Support, Safety for Managers and Supporters, Managing Adults, Assessing Learning and Supporting Adults.

The modules for managers and leaders are delivered in groups as their content relates to one another and held over a weekend. This method of delivery is chosen as from past experience, leaders and managers benefit from working and sharing together in small groups, which in turn benefits the young people they work with. Plus, it's more fun!

Module 25, Assessing Learning, is held over one day. Even though this module forms part of the managers training, it is also open to leaders who hold a specific role assessing other adults. For example, training advisers and night’s away advisers.

Module 10, First Aid is another day course, generally from 9.00am until 4.30pm. Once completed you will receive an Appointed Persons (changing to Emergency First Aid at Work In September 2009) Certificate, which is valid for three years.

Modules 10’s are held at least ten times a year in both Bromley and Bexley Boroughs. For further information, please see the Directory in this brochure for Jim Foster and Steve Harvey. Module 37 is for all those involved in the appointments process. There are two training sessions to choose from, Saturday am or pm.

The Child Protection Workshops are open to everyone in Scouting. The workshops will take place on Tuesday (30th June) and Wednesday (10th June) in the evening, and there will be the opportunity to attend a Saturday
morning or afternoon workshop on the 20th June. Participants will gain a certificate, valid for three years. This workshop could be used to validate on-going training after completion of the Wood Badge.

General Course Information

Meals and Drinks, unless stated, are provided throughout the course. The caterers take dietary and medical requirements into consideration.

It is common for all leaders and managers to start and finish the course in uniform and at other times wear comfortable clothing.

The only other items leaders and managers require are pen/paper. All participants will receive joining instructions before the course starts.

Except for Module 16, all courses are non-residential and over two days, Saturday and Sunday. Most courses start at 9.30am and are generally finished by 6.00pm. Sometimes this does vary.

If you are unable to attend
weekends or evenings, there are other methods by which a majority of the modules can be completed. Please speak to your Local Training Manager/Contact.
(They are listed in the directory).

How much does it cost?

For all courses run by GLSE, there is no charge this year for Leaders in the county. All courses run by other counties incur a charge.

However, for modules 1-19, 25 and 37 a deposit must be paid. The amount being £25 for modules 1-15,18,19,25 and 37. £35 for modules 16 and 17. This must be attached to all application forms. Cheques should be made payable to GLSE Scouts.

For the Child Protection workshops, only the standard form need apply.

The reason for deposits is that all courses require a considerable financial commitment before they start. Costs incurred are
Accommodation, Catering and the purchase of resources. The cheque will be returned if the leader attends the course.

How do I apply?

To apply for a course the standard training application form must be used.

Once complete the form must be sent with the deposit to:
Training Team Administrator, Mrs Trish Webb - trainingadmin@glsescouts.org.uk

Are there any course rules I should know about?

Yes! We have to have rules because some courses have to be registered by outside agencies before they start and the financial commitments already explained.

1) All courses have a closing date ten days prior to the start.
2) Courses will only take place if a minimum of ten participants register before the closing date.
3) If ten participants are not registered by the closing date then you will be offered a place on the next available course.
