Councillors take on scouts at activity day

Bexley scouts challenged local councillors at an activity day last weekend.

On October 10th, councillors joined scouts from Bexley and Bromley at Downe Scout Activity Centre, taking part in challenges such as abseiling, archery, backwoods cooking and high all aboard.

The ‘high all aboard’ challenge involves four people climbing up a pole onto a shared platform.

Christine Catterall, councillor for the East Wickham ward, said: “It was a very enjoyable day trying out some of the activities on offer at Downe.

“The event was great fun and it was lovely to see the youngsters enjoying themselves on the climbing wall and the zip wire.”

“We were very well looked after by the Scouts who cheerfully showed us around and answered all of our questions.”

Currently, there are more than 5,200 young people aged 6 to 25 involved in Scouting within Bromley and Bexley, with the association’s chief scout currently all-round adventurer Bear Grylls.

The day was organised as the Greater London South East Scouts group calls on local councillors to champion scouting in their local area.

The Bexley scouts district was formed in 2011 from four smaller districts and now adult volunteers in Bromley and Bexley Scouting contribute 327,000 voluntary hours per year to the Scouts.

Bexley explorer Scout, Alfie Bird, 15, said: “I really enjoyed the activity day and meeting my local councillors.

“I enjoyed having the opportunity to promote scouting and what it means to young people and how it can change lives.”
