The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. All leaders in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of an Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section.
The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.
In GLSE we provide a comprehensive free training programme to support our young leaders which comes in three parts:
1. Residential Training Weekend
Each year, we run two residential training weekends, one in the Spring and one in the Winter Term. The weekend is action packed with activities, training and games - during which we cover the following young leader training modules.
2. First Aid Training
Supported by our County First Aid Trainers, our young leaders, attend a further day of First Aid Training, where they will gain the Emergency First Aid at work qualification, the same training that our adult leaders attend.
3. Missions - putting what has been learnt into practice
After the training, its time to put everything that has been learnt into practice, and young leaders complete this by completing four missions:
Each Young Leader is given an online tracker for them to record their progress in - when they have completed their missions they will be presented with their Young Leader Belts and badges
Training Weekend: 10th - 12th March 2017
First Aid Bromley: Saturday 18th March
First Aid Bexley: Sunday 19th March
