Who Can Apply?

All modules are for Leaders and Managers in the Scout Association who require training to fulfill their role.

Adult Training Scheme

The adult training scheme is made up of a number of Modules. A number of Modules are available with a workbook or on-line via e-learning.

Module 38: This is an additional ‘skills’ module which expands on Module 16, and also very useful to those seeking to become Nights Away Adviser. This is a ‘practical skills’ day and residential weekend to get leaders thinking about ‘the OUT in Scouting’ and learn in a safe environment. The weekend give you an ideal opportunity to learn from experienced trainers/scouters and from other delegates attending

Mandatory on-going learning

Although the on-going learning hours a learner is required to complete each year can be any number of things, there are also some specific on-going learning requirements which come members must complete. Any Member who holds an appointment for which an appointment review is required MUST complete the mandatory on-going learning

On-going Safeguarding Training

Members are required to complete the approved Scouting specific safeguarding training at least every five years, to be monitored by their line manager at the point of appointment review.

There is The Scout Association Safeguarding Awareness Training module which learners may complete to meet this requirement. This can be completed by either attending a locally run course which meets the specified objectives and is delivered by approved trainers; or by completing the approved Safeguarding e-learning for this module. The e-learning, along with further information, can be found at scouts.org.uk/ongoinglearning. Please also see the FAQs regarding Mandatory Safeguarding Training. In Greater London South East all adults working with Young People MUST renew their Safeguarding knowledge every five years. The content of the courses we hold consists of a reminder of Yellow Card procedures, appropriate care when communicating with Young People via text or email, Scouting's Anti Bullying policy and an introduction to CEOP.  This module is run six evenings a year. If you are a new adult then you will cover the initial safeguarding requirement when completing module 1 Essential Information. After which there is the option to participate in a refresher course or to do the online training. You may only do the online training once in 6 years.

On-going Safety Training

Members are required to complete Scouting specific safety training at least every five years, to be monitored at the point of appointment review by their line manager. There is an On-going Safety Training module which learners may complete to meet this requirement. This can be completed by either attending a locally run course which meets the specified objectives; or by completing the approved Safety e-learning available for this module. First Aid Training

All adults in Scouting holding a Leader, Manager or Supporter appointment are also required to hold a current First Aid certificate. While everyone is encouraged to maintain their qualification at all times, the First Aid certificate must be valid at the issue of the Wood Badge and for appointment renewal. This should be monitored by their line manager at the point of appointment review, at least every five years.

For all Mandatory Training please ensure that you retain your certificates as they are proof that you have completed the sessions. These should be forwarded on to your Training Advisor so that they can validate the training and update your records in Compass.

Further information

These modules for Managers and Leaders are delivered in groups as their contents relate to each other. Courses are run on Saturdays and Sundays.

This method of delivery is chosen as, from past experience, Leaders and Managers benefit from working and sharing together in small groups, which in turn benefits the Young people with whom they work. Plus, it's more fun!

This does not mean that a Leader or Manager has to attend all the modules on any given day. You can attend for a single module or a number of modules over the course of the two days if you have agreed so with your Training Advisor

Most days start at 9.30am and are generally finished by 6.00pm. The Training Team also delivers some modules on single days and evenings to fit in with lifestyles and family commitments. Evening sessions only cover one module at a time and generally start at 7.30pm and finish no later than 10.00pm. Please see the training calendar below for details on all courses.

Some modules are organised differently. This is due to specific roles or the content.

Safety issues

It is the responsibility of all those involved in Scouting to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that all activities are conducted in a safe manner without risk to the health of the participants.

Modules 28 Facilitating and 29 Presenting

These modules are open to any adult who wishes to further develop their skills in working with other adults.
Module 28 is ideal for Section Leaders, Group Scout Leaders and training team members. Topics include small group working, counselling and motivation.
Module 29 covers all aspects of giving and delivering presentations on courses, group events, etc.

General Course Information 

On the majority of Saturday and Sunday modules, food and drink is provided. If notified on your application form, caterers will adapt menus to dietary and medical requirements. On Module 10, First Aid, you will be required to bring a packed lunch. Evening modules drinks and biscuits will be served.

It is common for all Leaders and Managers to start and finish the course in uniform and at other times wear comfortable clothing. The only other items Leaders and Managers require are pen & paper. All participants will receive joining instructions before the course starts. Evening courses do not require uniform.

How much does it cost?

For all courses run by Greater London South East, there is no charge for Leaders from Scout Groups within the London Region.

Should you book a place on a course and fail to attend on the day your Group/unit will be invoiced directly from GLSE. The charges will be £25 per module or group of modules over a weekend and £35 for Module 38. The reason for this is that all courses require a considerable financial commitment before they start. Costs incurred are accommodation, catering and the purchase of resources. These would have all be paid for ahead of the course.

Once you have booked your place your joining instructions will be sent via e-mail to the e-mail address that you specified on the booking form. If you find, however, that once you have received your joining instructions and are now not able to come along then please e-mail trainingadmin@glsescouts.org.uk as soon as possible as it may be we can offer your place to someone else.

Are there any modular rules I should know about?

Yes! We have to have rules because some courses have to be registered by outside agencies before they start and the financial commitments already explained.

1) All courses have a closing date ten days prior to the start.
2) Courses will only take place if a minimum of ten participants register before the closing date.
3) If ten participants are not registered by the closing date then you will be offered a place on the next available course.

Please make sure you provide an e-mail address you regularly access as this is the means by which Joining Instructions will be sent out.

Personal Learning Plan Templates

Please find below the Personal Learning Plans as used in Greater London South East. These templates can be updated and stored on your computer. A reminder to all Managers and leaders who have identified a training need. Modular training provided by the County Training Team covers the training element. Once you have attended a module you must then validate the learning. That means putting into practice what you have learnt and providing evidence to your Training Adviser to support this learning. Your Training Adviser is there to guide and support you through your training. It is the responsibility of the Leader to attend modules and then supply evidence for validation. Please refer to the Adults Personal File for more details.
