Home > Adult Support > Training
The training that you need to complete depends on the volunteer role that you are taking on. Training is broken down into groups of modules:
To help you understand the module requirements, there are several resources to help you to assess the skills and knowledge you already have and decide additional learning you need to complete:
The time taken and validation requirements for each module will vary, but on the whole;
It's important to bear in mind that completion of the Young Leaders’ Scheme cannot be used as automatic validation for any module, but it should give an indication of the prior learning that may have been gained and should be taken into consideration when agreeing the Personal Learning Plan. You must still show how your knowledge is applicable to your new role and validate modules in the same way as all other learners.
A useful table showing the links between the two schemes can be found on the Scouts website.
All volunteers should have their own Training Advisor. This could be your Line Manager, a dedicated Training Advisor within your Group, or a member of the District or County Team.
NEW FOR 2023 - Validation Days
As we know that not everyone will have access to a dedicated Training Advisor, the Training Team are holding Validaition Days where anyone can come along with their completed evidence to have modules validated. Just turn up during the day, no need to book!
Adult volunteers are required to complete 5 hours per year of supplementary training once their modular system has been completed. This can either be training on one of the Supplementary Modules, or any other training which is used within your role. Even training completed at work that is relevant can be counted. All ongoing and additional training should be recorded within Compass within the ongoing training section by a Line Manager or Training Advisor.
To ensure that everyone is kept up to date, it is mandatory to update some modules every three years
All the modules are shown below along with links to the relevant pages on the Scouts website which will provide more information, links to any online learning, and any workbooks that are available. Our County Training Calendar is also below.
To book a place on a course please complete the GLSE Training Application Form. Should you have any questions regarding booking, please email the County Training Team Administrator, trainingadmin@glsescouts.org.uk.
In addition to courses run by GLSE, members are able to book on to any course being run by the other London Counties free of charge or at the same charge that is made to their own members for food etc. The following links will take you to each County:
For all courses run by Greater London South East, there is no charge for volunteers from within the London Region. Please note that as courses incur costs such as accomodation, catering and resources, should you book a place on a course and fail to attend on the day and not notify the person running the course, your Group/Unit will be invoiced directly from GLSE.
The County Training Team are always happy to provide advice about training, validation, permits, or anything else you may have questions about. Just email the Training Team on training@glsescouts.org.uk and one of us will get back to you.
